LAKELAND – The dedicated volunteers of the 2nd Chance Trail Ride Society are reminding everyone that April 7 is Green Shirt Day, and ask that people "wear green in support of Green Shirt Day and use it as a  conversation starter with friends and family about the importance of having discussions with family ahead of your time of passing about your wishes around organ donation.”

Six years ago on April 6, 2018, Logan Boulet was one of 16 fatalities resulting from a Saskatchewan crash between the Humboldt Broncos hockey team bus and a semi trailer that failed to stop at a Saskatchewan highway intersection. Another 13 were seriously injured.

“In the wake of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash, Logan Boulet’s family followed his wishes to become an organ donor, allowing his gift to save and improve the lives of six people. In doing so, Logan created a legacy, which inspired hundreds of thousands of people all over the world to register to become organ and tissue donors, which will save lives for generations to come. We commemorate Logan’s actions of giving the ‘Gift of Life’ on April 7, by observing this date as Green Shirt Day. It’s also a day to honour and remember all organ and tissue donors.”

A growing and inspiring list of Alberta landmarks, from the Alberta Legislature and High Level Bridge in Edmonton and the Calgary Tower, to the Ukrainian Easter Egg in Vegreville, among other sites across the province, will be lit up in green on April 7, and there is hope that this move will spread even further with homes and businesses sporting green lights that evening, “and set out a hockey stick if you have one kicking around."

The 2nd Chance Trail Ride Society is a non-profit organization founded in 2012. The organization's mission is to "encourage organ and tissue donations, give thanks to those who have donated and support individuals going the transplant journey," according to information from the group's website.

The 2nd Chance Trail Ride Society hosts an annual trail ride in the Elk Point area, along with a summer golf tournament near Edmonton, as a way to create awareness and raise funds.
