A community peace officer from MD of Bonnyville had attempted to stop a four-door sedan for a traffic safety violation.

“The sedan was heading southbound on Highway 892 and failed to stop at a controlled intersection at Highway 28,” according to police. “A collision subsequently occurred with a pickup truck heading eastbound on Highway 28.”

A 25-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man travelling in the sedan died as a result of injuries sustained in collision.

Both occupants were from the Elizabeth Métis Settlement.

A first appearance has been scheduled for the peace officer in Cold Lake Provincial Court on April. 13.

The name of the officer has not been released. As the matter is before the court, RCMP will not be providing further details or updates.
