With an unexpected Christmas gift, I found myself reading an author I would not have thought of reading only a few years ago.

The new year is a time of potential for the people of St. Paul and the surrounding region. In just a few days, families, seniors and young and old alike will gather to count down to 2012 and celebrate the beginning of the new year.

It’s been nearly four months since I returned to work at the St. Paul Journal after taking a year maternity leave, and the past 113 days have been some of the busiest of my entire life.

I had a serious case of the Grinches this past week. Christmas had boiled down to nothing more than an endless stream of stress and work and shopping and work and budgeting and more work and I was done with all of it. My car was getting on my nerves.

I have these childhood memories of Christmas time, ones like playing on the snowy hill near my grandma's old farmhouse in Saskatchewan with all the cousins, while the parents slaved away in the kitchen – tasting wide varieties of wine.
