Earlier this year, Northern Lights Public Schools announced that Buffalo Lake, the only Métis settlement in Alberta without an onsite school, had been approved for the funding.

The program will be taught at Portage College's Lac La Biche campus and focus on topics such as psychiatric nursing, psychology, social work, child and youth care, as well as addiction counselling.

Under the restriction, portable propane fire pits, gas or propane stoves and barbeques, and catalytic or infrared-style heaters are permitted. However, existing fire permits remain cancelled, and no new fire permits will be issued.

A new school will soon replace Lac La Biche’s 52-year-old Vera M. Welsh Elementary School. The project is one of 11 school projects across Alberta that have been fast-tracked by the province for construction.  

The Lakeland Métis Nation Association has been awarded $600,000 for cancer screening awareness programs through the provincial Cancer Research in Screening Prevention Program.  

The event was held on May 15 at McArthur Place in Lac La Biche.

The Road to Hope community support foundation, which transports cancer patients in the counties of Lac La Biche and Athabasca to appointments, currently has four drivers in the Lac La Biche area.
